Papi Wines, now in Dominican Republic!

Updated: Jul 28, 2022

Hello my dear friends! This is a very special Wednesday as we have officially become brand ambassadors of Papi Wines in Dominican Republic. We feel nothing but honored by such opportunity and look forward to this new alliance with Simone International, a family-owned wine wholesale and import business based in New Jersey. Started from a simple business model, Simone International has grown into one of the leading wholesale wine and liquor distributors on the East Coast.

Traditionally, beer and spirits, especially rum, have been the preferred alcoholic beverages in the Dominican Republic, especially among rural, lower-income populations. Wine consumption began to experience rapid growth in the late 1990s, surpassing annual sales of over 100,000 cases to approximately 500,000 by 2000. By 2007, wine consumption alone rounded 7 million liters annually, which represented more than $18 million dollars annually. In more recent decades, the market for wine has been in a sustained rise.

“Papi”, named after the common term of endearment used in everyday conversation in Latin-American countries has a ‘softly sweet’ flavor profile which makes it a very unique and inviting product. Even those less inclined to consume wine, often like Papi products especially women. The brand was introduced in 2007 and has become one of the fastest growing brands in this category.

Papi comes from Chile, a country with a long winemaking tradition, located in between the Pacific Ocean to the west and the prodigious Andes Mountain Range to the east. The country is almost 2,700 miles long, from the Atacama Desert in the north to the icy Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America. Most of the country's wine regions fall between the 32nd and 38th parallels. Therein lies a pocket where good things have been happening with wine for a long time! Papi is no different.

In this first phase of work in Dominican Republic, we are focusing on three specific varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvingnon. These labels are being now distributed in two big sub-regions: Santiago de los Caballeros to the north and east and Santo Domingo to the south and west.

Papi Cabernet Sauvignon is a red wine with a deep crimson color and dark violet tones. The nose is filled with spiced aromas, especially pepper, with a taste of red berries. It exhibits soft tannins make for a sweet finish on the palate. It pairs very well with poultry and pasta dishes. Papi Cabernet is a demi-sec that has no sugar added and is sweetened by must, with all-natural, freshly-crushed grape juice.

Papi Merlot pops due to a fruity sweeter taste. Its deep crimson color with magenta tones evoke smells of plum, blackberry and chocolate aromas. On the palate you will be surprised by dark berries and soft tannins, which makes for a sweet finish on the palate. It is a very smooth, easy to drink wine.

Papi Sauvignon Blanc shows a pale yellow color, with green hues. On the palate it is remarkable, of incredible citrus, spring flower and subtle Muscat aromas. The acidity is very neutral, with notes of freshly cut green apples, ruby-red grapefruit, and honeysuckle. Papi Sauvignon Blanc pairs best with green vegetables, oysters, goat cheese and fresh herbs.

We are so excited to be part of Papi's journey in the Dominican Republic and can't wait to tell you about all the good things that are about to happen!

And that's a wrap for today my friends! Let's meet here next Wednesday, until then... Santé!
