Goodbye 2022, Cheers to 2023!

Hello my dear friends! The end of 2022 is approaching, which represents new challenges for the wine industry, a truly significant commercial and economic power worldwide. So our post today will explore those new trends that are already shaping the way for wine in the coming year. Let's dive in...

I think we all agree about the increasing importance and effectiveness of the digital marketing. As a matter of fact the wine industry is being forced to change its ways in order to stay ahead of cometition. Winemakers are now strategizing and turning to digital marketing to reach their target market. The goal is to create real-time awareness about their products and by doing so, to drive more sales in every platform.

The market for natural wine has also grown significantly in the last few years. While it used to be a niche market, it’s becoming more mainstream. The natural wine trend has helped the industry expand into new markets. For instance, China has numerous wineries and about 4 million acres of vineyards. There, more than 3 billion liters of wine are produced annually, and they are starting to export their products overseas.

Sparkling wine is a popular beverage in many European countries. But it’s only recently that sparkling wine has become more popular. In 2023 this category is expected to become an everyday staple in the US and globally. Sparkling wine will overtake traditional beer as the US’ most commonly consumed alcoholic beverage, outselling great beer brands by the end of next year.

E-commerce is also a thing these days. With the growing digitalization, people have become more accustomed to shopping from the comfort of their homes. This has allowed small wineries to reach a broader market and increase sales. Therefore, the growth of eCommerce has helped smaller wineries to market themselves more effectively online. And we love that!

Market research suggests the global boxed/canned wines market could grow in the double digits over the next few years. Consumers increasingly demand convenience, and portable, lightweight cans deliver it. Cans can also make wine more approachable for consumers and upend misconceptions surrounding wine’s upper-crusty image. This is intrinsically linked to another important aspect from a consumer's perspective: concern for the environment. In these days more and more customers look for wines that are certified vegan, organic, and sustainably produced. Small-scale wineries that produce natural wines once considered fringe products are making inroads in markets previously dominated by big wine producers.

In terms of novelties, a whole world of wine-based cocktails awaits! Given the rise of an increased focus on health and wellness, drinkers everywhere are turning to lower-alcohol cocktail alternatives such as wine-based ones. Those seeking lighter mixed drinks and new flavor combinations will delight in 2023. Time to get your mixology and sommelier teams together!

While, according to experts, Pinot Noir is likely to become the star in 2023, more alternative varietals are also trendy: Tempranillo, Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Primitivo, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Whites from Rioja such as Viura-based wines and blends of White Tempranillo and Grenache, Verdejo, and even Torrontés will become more popular in 2023.
