A brilliant night at Los Gallegos!

Hello dear friends! Last Wednesday a very special pairing took place at Los Gallegos Restaurant. This legendary restaurant with limited capacity - often a meeting place for executives, businessmen and lovers of Galician food in general-, was chosen by The Wine Chaser to celebrate the first pairing dinner of 2022. And it was lovely!

The dinner was attended by members of the TWC Wine Club, the influencer Imaray Ulloa, wine enthusiasts such as Dr. Fabian Fontaine and other special guests of the restaurant.

Needless to say that the occasion was one of elegance and pleasure, not only because of the menu and the wines presented, but also because of the excellent service that Los Gallegos has accustomed us to.

Nicte Verdejo Ecológico from Avelino Vegas was the big opening, paired with tasty peppers stuffed with cod (Portuguese style). This was an exuberant start as Nicte is a crisp wine with beautifully balanced acidity and a long finish, perfect for pairing with seafood.

As a second course we had a spectacular sea bass flambéed with cognac and saffron. Since the sauce used for this particular recipe is so dense and rich, we dared to go with the unexpected: El Angosto Almendros, a blend of Grenache, Tintorera, Marselan and Syrah made in Valencia by Bodegas Angosto. Several important critics have rated this Valencia wine highly: Guia Penin gave the 2012 vintage a score of 92 points. Although risky, the pairing was a success according to guests.

The great moment of the night came with the beef loin slowly cooked in red wine and paired with Laurona Monsant. This wine is a blend of Grenache, Cariñena, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. It displays a bright violet color and sharp exotic aromas of black raspberry, cola cherry and lavender, with a spicy mineral undertone. Tight red fruit flavors give way too deep blackberries and cherries on the mid-palate with a silky texture and spicy appeal. Laurona's mineral note returns in the long and concentrated finish.

The evening concluded with a selection of Spanish cheeses served with an exquisite fig jam and the incomparable Patricius Aszu 6 Puttonyos Tokaj.

Scroll down to see a few moments from our wonderful night! Congratulations to all of our friends who attended and specially to those whose hard work made this night an unforgettable one.

Cheers!

Idania Gonzalez, as usual, led the pairing experience.

“It is the wine that leads me on, the wild wine that sets the wisest man to sing at the top of his lungs, laugh like a fool – it drives the man to dancing... it even tempts him to blurt out stories better never told.”
